Posted 12/16/2017

0610 hours. The Centereach Fire Department is dispatched to a report of a motor vehicle collision on Middle Country Road at Main Avenue. Units arrive to find a crash involving three vehicles, one of which was overturned, two of which were burning. Wires were down and arcing and burning fuel oil was running down the street and into the storm drains. The overturned vehicle was an oil delivery truck carrying 3910 gallons of home heating oil. The occupants of all three vehicles self-extricated prior to the arrival of the fire department and sustained minor injuries.

Crews put a master stream into service and a hand-line with foam. Mutual aid was requested from the Selden, Terryville and Ronkonkoma FDs for an engine each with foam. A request was placed to Islip MacArthur Airport for a crash truck. This request was denied by the airport due to a lack of manpower. The Nesconset Fire Department was also requested for an engine. The fire was extinguished, and efforts were made to limit the runoff into the storm drains. NYS DEC, NYS Encon Police, Suffolk County Police Motor Carrier Safety, the Lake Grove Fire Marshal and the Town of Brookhaven Fire Marshals are handling the investigation and clean up.

Middle Country Road remained closed until well into the evening while crews cleaned up and repaired/restored electrical service in the area.
