Propane leak in St. James

Posted 9/4/2018

1045 hours. St. James Fire Department responds to a report of an outside gas leak on Emmet Way in Head of the Harbor. FD units arrived to find that a tree came down and landed on the valve assembly for a buried tank resulting in a leak and damaging the shutoff valve.

Assistant Chief Mills requested a response from the contracted LP gas provider and a line was stretched and operated, dispersing the gas vapors. Crews monitored the atmospheric conditions in the area and the Smithtown Fire Marshals Office put Islip Town Haz-Mat on stand by in case a burn off was necessary. FD personnel were able to stop the leak and then stood by, monitoring until Paraco gas arrived. Units from St. James, Stony Brook and Nesconset Fire Department operated on scene until approximately 1300 hours.
